We took our end of summer trip down to CA right before school started. We decided to drive down the Oregon and CA coast to San Francisco area...camping along the way. We took 4 days/3 nights to get down to CA and had a beautiful adventure!
The boys LOVE the beach! Cole is a happy guy...
...and Dylan too!

We had to stop in Florence, OR to check out the Darlingtonia Botanical Gardens to see the bog full of carnivorous plants. The boys were very excited to see both a bog AND carnivorous plants!
Farther south we camped at Sunset Bay, which boasts Oregon's best swimmable beach. It was a lovely spot...but still too cold to really swim!
The boys have really enjoyed camping over the summer and would probably prefer to be camping than being at home...especially when smores are involved (which also means there is a camp fire!).
Heading towards southern Oregon we stopped in Port Orford to enjoy the warm rays and fantastic views.
This marina in Port Orford had a crane that would lift boats off the dock into the water...we waited as long as we could in hopes of seeing it work, but unfortunately had to get back in the car before a boat was lifted into the ocean.
We made a quick stop in Arcata and got to have some yummy treats and listen to music at the Saturday Farmers Market in the plaza. Fond memories.
We stopped in Hopland at the Real Goods and the boys worked hard to ride the bicycle to power the light bulb.
The rode so hard and fast they were simply a blur!
Once we got down to our destination, Marin Co., near San Fransisco...we went for a hike with Aunt Lesley to Muir Woods to see some big redwood trees. The first bench we got to the boys stopped and pulled out their notebooks and pencils and got busy drawing things in nature. Hard to discourage the creative juices even when we were only about 25 feet from the entrance!
We stayed with Grammy Carol and were very lucky to also have Aunt Lesley and Uncle David there too!!
We made sure to hit our favorite spots in San Fransisco with Grandpa Charlie like this fountain you can walk through near the Embarcadero.
We have also been wanting to fly kites for EVER...but don't have that kind of wind in Corvallis. So we bought some fancy new kites and headed out to Crissy Fields in the city and caught some perfect gusts!
And once the adults realized that we had to un-tape the tail of Cole's bird kite...he was a happy flyer...
...as long as Grandpa Charlie, Uncle David, Aunt Lesley, Mom or Dad was there to lift the kite when ever it felt to the ground!
It was a week of finding great kite flying locations.
This beach was a good one for wind...but was too cold for people!
This spot in Tiburon was windy and at least sunny!
But still cold so we did a quick flight session.
The boys were enamored with this big book of facts we got from the library. They loved reading to their Aunt Lesley!
We stopped over in Oakland to see some friends and try out some delicious coconut ice cream!
The Fiegener Fam hitting the streets of San Francisco.
We also took the boys to Chinatown which they were VERY excited about. They loved checking out all the items displayed on the sidewalk and had to try out every back-scratcher we came across!
And try out every hat available!
They were so amazed that every store had nearly the same items displayed as the last store!
We found a fortune cookie making store where we got to watch the cookies being made...and yes they put the fortunes in after the cookie is cooked! Here the boys are eating about their 4th fortune cookie and reading their fortunes.
We also tried out other tasty treats sold in odd shapes!
Dylan and Grammy Carol enjoying the view.
Dylan told me to take his picture with this lion sculpture. He told me where to stand to get the best shot of the lion and the street. Then he posed. Perfection!
We lucked out to be able to spend time with Aunt Lesley and Uncle David on this trip! Here is the whole gang out to dinner!
The boys always love going to Sandy's pool when we visit Grammy Carol!!
The favorite morning activity...walking the dog with Grammy Carol!
Can't wait until we return for more adventures!
